You are Invited to…

Faith-Rooted Organizing Training
Friday, March 4, 2011
9:00am to 5:30pm
(with break from 11:30-1pm)

Hosted by Judson Memorial Church
55 Washington Square South
New York, NY 10012

Come experience this one-day introductory training on how to address injustice in our city and our world in a way that draws power from the roots of our faith.

Faith-rooted organizing is bringing people together to create change in a way that is shaped and guided in every way by the deepest beliefs of our faith. It is not “faith-based” organizing which focuses simply on organizing people of faith. Instead, faith-rooted organizing draws from the real power of our faith to enable people of faith, all faiths, to contribute their unique gifts to the broader movement for social and economic justice.

The Trainers:
Rev. Alexia Salvatierra is the executive director of C.L.U.E. (Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice), an organization of religious leaders in four cities in California (San Fransisco, Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego). C.L.U.E. supports low-wage workers in their struggle for a living wage, health insurance, fair working conditions and a voice in the decisions that affect them. Lisa Sharon Harper is the executive director of NY Faith & Justice, a growing movement of congregations, advocates, government representatives, and individuals committed to ending poverty in New York through spiritual formation, education, and direct advocacy.

How to Register:

It’s time for Reveal’s annual Valentine’s Day Ultimate Makeover event, where NYC professionals from the beauty and fashion industries provide makeovers for New York women who have been battered and abused. Reveal was birthed out of one of TGC’s first missional communities, and many people from our community have been involved over the years.

We need volunteers!

Details
Saturday Feb 12th 11am-5pm
Contact: Melanie or Hannah

Reveal is a grassroots movement of NYC professionals from all industries coming together to demonstrate and reinforce love and healing by providing opportunities to celebrate beauty and dignity, including the annual Valentine’s Day Makeover. Started in 2006, Reveal is gaining momentum in corporately and intentionally helping women feel celebrated, beautiful, loved and chosen with no strings attached. Reveal marries NY Fashion Week with a modern-day Cinderella Story by providing professional one-on-one consultation in fashion, beauty, skincare and hair, so women are treated like royalty and provided a magical experience they will never forget.

Reveal indirectly helps women in their recovery by partnering with local organizations and shelters to provide an experience of celebration of beauty and dignity, which then reinforces what the organizations try to instill in their clients.

We wanted to let you know that several of our justice partners here in the city are having events this fall.

Be The Change Fundraiser, September 18

Be the Change is a non-profit organization that provides education, mentoring and basic needs for the lives of children in Uganda, by offering housing, medical care, a village mentor, and monthly allowances for food and transportation. We want you to feel like you’re a part of our kids’ lives and stories, so our upcoming Be The Change fundraiser on September 18 will showcase original music and dramatic pieces telling stories from our children’s and staff’s lives.

Until then, we need jars of all shapes and sizes. So bring your jars to church on Sept 6 (any service) for a BTC rep to collect.

Be the Change Presents: WITNESS UGANDA
Friday September 18 (time TBD) at The Tank, 354 W 45th St

Reveal Fall Workshops

Reveal is a grassroots movement of NYC professionals from all industries coming together to demonstrate and reinforce love and healing by providing opportunities to celebrate beauty and dignity fro women recovering from abuse and sex exploitation.

Volunteer opportunities
If you would be interested in volunteering at these events in your area of expertise, with childcare, or know anyone that can donate products to create ‘Self Care’ starter kits (make-up, skin care, hair and health-related items) please contact us.
